How do I find an image or photo that I am looking for?
The easiest way is just to type a keyword or two into the search box on the left hand side of the page. Typing 'castle' and clicking on search will display all photos and images relating to the term. You can also type a phrase in inverted commas "dungarvan castle". This will display all photos and images relating to the search phrase.

A more sophisticated search can be performed by using the fields listed under the search box.

  • Photographer - Find images from this photographer.
Image Format - You can decide to search for an image type eg colour photos or drawings.
  • Location - Limit the search to a parish. If your parish is not listed we don't have an image for that parish yet. If you want to contribute images of your parish read the articles entitled Submit Photos & Outreach Programme.
  • Subject - Search for images by subject eg Maritime, Buildings etc.
  • From Year - Set the earliest year that you want to include in the search results.
  • To Year - Set the latest year you want to have included in the results.

You can select between none and all of these fields to narrow your search. If you wish you need not enter a search term in the search box after setting the above fields. If the search box is empty when the search button is clicked it will return all images that meet the parameters of the fields.

What way can I view the search results?
Once you have searched the database you have three search result views available to you:

  • Thumbnail - This is the default view and allows you to see a thumbnail view of each image found. To view the next page of results click on the Next Image(s) link in the top right hand corner. Clicking on thumbnail will display a large version of the image in a pop up window.
  • Listing - Displays the results in text format giving the image title and description. To view the next page of results click on the Next Image(s) link in the top right hand corner.
  • Serial View - Displays the images one at a time as a slide show presentation. To view the next image click the Next Image link in the top right hand corner.

Can I buy photos and images?
We do not intend to sell the images within the database for two reasons.

  1. We do not own copyright on all of the images displayed in the database. Many of the images have been loaned to us for display on the database only.
  2. If we were seen to profit from collecting the images by donors & collectors it may stop them contributing material so freely.

If an image is copyright Waterford County Museum we may be able to make it available to a member of the public for personal use in return for a donation covering the cost of printing and packing. Please contact us indicating the image you are interested in.

Where can I get a better quality image than is available on the web site?
All of the images in the database have been scanned to a very high resolution. In order to prevent unauthorised use / reduce download times; we do not make these high quality images available to the public via the web site. If you are an academic, historian, non-profit organisation or have a personal interest in a particular photo please contact us giving your personal details and reason for requiring the image and we will attempt to facilitate you with a high quality electronic image where copyright allows.

How can I donate photos / images?
