Here is the rationale that we used when deciding what subject / categories an image should be filed in. Remember many images can be filed in multiple categories.

Architecture And Engineering
This section is focused on built heritage.

  • Bridges - including railway and pedestrian bridges.
  • Castles - please note that not all structures called castles are castles. The majority of structures in County Waterford called a castle are in fact tower houses and properly belong in the towers section. The two castles in County Waterford are King Johns Castle, Dungarvan and Lismore Castle. You also have buildings such as Strancally Castle which is in fact a country house.
  • Churches - Roman Catholic, Protestant, etc. churches. Holy wells & tombs etc. belong in the [Monuments] category.
  • Civil Engineering - Piers, wharfs, harbours, pipe laying, road mending.
  • Convents & Abbeys
  • Country Houses - this section includes entrance lodges, gateways and the grounds of country houses.
  • Monuments - tombs, holy wells.
  • Parks & Amenities - public parks, band stands.
  • Public & Civic Buildings - court houses, town halls, Garda & RIC barracks etc.
  • Residential - buildings that don't fall under the category of Country Houses. Includes parish priests homes etc.
  • Schools
  • Shop Fronts & Interiors - an image is filed in this category if the detail of the shop front or interior can be made out. Photos that feature 3 or more shop fronts are normally better filed in [Streetscapes].
  • Streetscapes - views of a town or villages street.
  • Towers - round towers, light houses, tower houses.
  • Street Furniture - Seats, benches, lamps, bollards, water pumps etc.

Designs And Posters

    • Badges & Insignia
    • Coats Of Arms
    • Bill Heads
    • Logos
    • Posters

Events

This section is focused on special events. Events that occur regularly such as football matches are better included in [Football] rather than this section. Likewise a mart would be better included in [Industry & Commerce] - [Agriculture]. Weddings, christenings and funerals are included in this section, as are local pattern festivals.

Industry And Commerce

This section is focused on specific commercial sectors. The primary focus of this section is the activity not the building. If you have an exterior image of a bank with no banking activity taking place, the photo would be more suitably filed in the [Shop Fronts & Interiors] category of [Architecture & Engineering].

  • Agriculture - images filed in this category include those covering agricultural activity. Growing, harvesting, threshing, farm machinery.
  • Finance - banking, insurance etc.
  • Fishing - commercial fishing only.
  • Food & Drink Production - Brewing, creamery activities, baking.
  • Manufacturing
  • Retail - in order for an image to be filed in this section retail activity should be taking place.
  • Services

Landscapes

This section is comprised of landscape photos.

Music And Culture

  • Dancing  - includes backstage photos of performers getting ready or rehearsing.
  • Music  - includes backstage photos of performers getting ready or rehearsing.
  • Theatre & Cinema - includes backstage photos of performers getting ready or rehearsing.

People And Occupations

The primary focus of this section is people so a photograph of an R.I.C. barracks without any constables in the photo would be filed in [Architecture & Engineering] - [Public & Civic Buildings].

Armed Forces And Police

2. Civil Defence

3. Coastguards & Lifeboat - includes rocket crews.

4. Free State - forces who fought for the free state during the Civil War.
